Completing A Dissertation: Editing And Proofreading Guide

Writing a dissertation is probably one of the most difficult types of academic work you had to do in your entire life as a student/PhD candidate. The complexity and the length of the dissertation paper can be scary at first, but as most of the people out there, you probably managed to get through everything successfully and you are now looking at your almost-complete dissertation. Yet, there are still some touch-ups you have to make and if you are not sure on what it is that you should do now, then continue reading and find out more.

  1. Make sure that you read everything once again and that it all ties up naturally and logically. Ideas should flow in a coherent way from one to the other one under any circumstances.
  2. Take some time and check for grammar mistakes. If you used a good word processing software application, then it has probably underlined everything that may be misspelled or very big grammar mistakes you may have made. However, do make sure that you do a “manual” grammar and spelling check as well because very frequently these software applications can fail when it comes to spotting more complicated mistakes.
  3. If you have written the paper in another language than your native one, then you should always make sure that you run a double-check on grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling. Remember that regardless of the topic your paper may have, you will still want to be credible and using bad grammar makes you an unreliable author.
  4. Make sure you respect the formatting standard as well. Some of the academic writing styles out there will require particular fonts and font sizes, others will require you to have a heading on each of the pages in your dissertation papers and others will allow you specific margins and spaces between the lines. Make sure you get acquainted with these norms and that you fix them in due time!
  5. Also, make sure that each of the paragraphs you have written starts with a so-called “topic sentence”. This first sentence should contain, in a nutshell, the main idea of the entire paragraph. In one way or another, you can look at it as a “mini thesis statement” of the entire chapter as well.
  6. Last, but not least, make sure you have left enough time for this entire process because although it may seem easy, it can be lengthy at times. Editing paragraphs, grammar and citations can be very difficult to do and if you will be on the run, you risk leaving big mistakes untouched in your entire work.

Helped me get an A+

I was about to use a custom editing service but decided to look for something free before I proceed with the payment. To my greatest surprise (and perhaps luck), I stumbled upon Editorial Veramar websites. I had to write a literature review for my composition class and had the paper ready but wasn't sure I would get an A, since my writing is far from perfect. I found a great manual for editing research papers and used the proposed step-by-step instructions. Guess what? I've received an A+!
