Last Words of Jesus on the Cross
Christianity is based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, so it is not surprising that the last words that were uttered by Jesus as he was being crucified would hold a special place within this religious group. There are seven specific thoughts that Jesus expressed that day and each of the seven can be analyzed to reveal a bit about the philosophy of the religion.
“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
Jesus was reported to say this as he was in agony suffering the physical effects of crucifixion. It shows that even in this state, Jesus was more concerned about the welfare of others, and in this case those that are torturing him, than he was for his own well being.
“I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Jesus was executed with two criminals, one on either side of him. This statement was made to one of the criminals who repented for his sin. Christians look at this story as proof that even up to the last minute your soul can be saved in you repent for your sins.
“Dear woman, here is your son.” And “Here is your mother.”
These lines are connected as Jesus spoke them to his mother and his friend and disciple John. It shows either that Jesus was concerned for those close to him, or that all mankind is connected, either way, it is interpreted often by many religious leaders.
“My Father, my Father, why have thou forsaken me?”
It is believed that in the heart of his pain and anguish Jesus knew God was not there, and this has been interpreted to mean that Jesus was holding the weight of all of the sins of mankind. Showing the ultimate sacrifice.
“I am thirsty.”
As Jesus was dying he was asking for something to drink. He had refused a drink early on in the process but his later accepting of a drink fulfilled an old testament prophecy that revealed him as the son of God.
“It is Finished”
Jesus was thought to state these words to God that he was laying down the ultimate sacrifice in order to save all mankind from their sin. It is finished means that the ultimate sacrifice was being made and that all men could be saved.
“Father into your hands, I commit my spirit.”
These are the last words that were spoken by Jesus according to the Bible. In the end, after all of the suffering that he was facing Jesus was now committing his spirit into the hands of God and giving up the earthly existence.
The final words of Jesus on the cross provide hope and understanding to all groups of Christianity all over the world and give food for thought as they look at the sacrifices that people make.
