A List of vital Personal Essay Proofreading Prompts

After you spend time writing a personal essay, you should take time to proofread the essay. There are several different things that writers should look for when they are proofreading. Each essay style has different styles that require different prompts for proofreading. When you read your personal essay, these are some of the things you should look to correct:

What did you write about? The personal essay is about you, but it should be more than just a journal or diary entry. Your personal essay should include a lesson that you learned during the event you are disclosing in the essay. If you are just telling a story, then you are writing a memoir rather than an essay because essays need to express an idea.

How did you choose to get the reader’s attention? The introduction is the only chance you have to make a first impression. If you have written a weak or boring introduction, then no one will want to continue reading your essay. Look at your introduction and read it out loud. Think about it from the reader’s perspective and if you find it to be dull, repetitive, or choppy, then make some changes.

What grammar and mechanical mistakes did you make? Nearly every writer makes mistakes with grammar and mechanics. The best way to discover the errors is not to use a grammar checker. The best way is to read the essay from the end to the beginning, reading one sentence at a time. When you say the sentences aloud, you will hear the mistakes and be able to fix them on the spot. It is also a good idea to find a friend or two to read the essay for you.

Did you pay attention to the flow of the essay? Flow and fluency are important to include. You do this by incorporating sentence that have a variety of beginnings. It is easy to check this by circling the first words of every sentence. In a personal essay, many writers get caught in the trap of starting every sentence with “I.” Once you see what you have done with the first words, you will be able to add variety. You can also change the transitions in your paragraphs, too. While it is nice to have them at the beginnings and endings of the paragraphs, transitions like “for example” are helpful inside of the paragraphs, too.

Helped me get an A+

I was about to use a custom editing service but decided to look for something free before I proceed with the payment. To my greatest surprise (and perhaps luck), I stumbled upon Editorial Veramar websites. I had to write a literature review for my composition class and had the paper ready but wasn't sure I would get an A, since my writing is far from perfect. I found a great manual for editing research papers and used the proposed step-by-step instructions. Guess what? I've received an A+!
