Vital Short Essays Proofreading Tips

Editing is Important, No Matter the Assignment

A lot of college students think that thorough editing and proofreading is a practice that should be reserved for full length writing projects, particularly research papers and term papers that are worth many points. However, all writing should be edited, no matter how short the assignment is or how short of a time frame you had to compose it.

Why should you edit and proofread all your papers? Simply put, because you want to leave a lasting professional impression on all your college instructors. Editing even the smallest, most minor writing assignments is a sign of your conscientiousness and commitment to producing high quality work. If you consistently produce edited, quality writing, you are far more likely to earn high grades and sterling letters of recommendation from your professors.

How Do You Edit and Proof a Short Essay?

When proofreading a short essay, you have the advantage of time. Even if you only had a week to compose the essay and turn it in, you can still budget your schedule to make certain that there is ample time to read the paper and edit it. Here are some specific guidelines for proofreading a short essay.

  1. Set aside time a day or two before the paper is to be turned in. Finish your draft before then.
  2. Take some time away from the paper before your proofread it, as this will help you detect errors more readily.
  3. Print out your essay; make sure to double space it and use a large and easily read font.
  4. Take a red pen or a pencil and sit down in an area with strong lighting and no audible distractions, and carefully read your paper.
  5. Read your paper aloud, and follow along using your pencil or pen, word by word. When you see a mistake, make a large and clear note, directly on the text.
  6. Take a break and read something else. Then return to your draft and read once more, this time with inflection or a change in speed. Make additional notes on the errors or awkward sounding passages.
  7. Sit down with your word processor and your notes and make all the changes you have recommended. Do not print a new version yet.
  8. Take a long break, preferably overnight. After sleeping, review your paper on the computer one last time. Scan for any new mistakes.
  9. If you can, give your paper to a peer and have them read it for errors and mistakes. Offer to do the same in return.

Helped me get an A+

I was about to use a custom editing service but decided to look for something free before I proceed with the payment. To my greatest surprise (and perhaps luck), I stumbled upon Editorial Veramar websites. I had to write a literature review for my composition class and had the paper ready but wasn't sure I would get an A, since my writing is far from perfect. I found a great manual for editing research papers and used the proposed step-by-step instructions. Guess what? I've received an A+!
